Green Computing

The concept of “Eco-friendly” techniques has entered and is now playing a vital role in the era of computing. The phrase “GREEN Computing” should be of relevance to all of you using computers on a day to day basis. As a fact, it is said to be acceptable, that GREEN Computing is the new kid of the IT boom.

Considering all the computers in the world and according to the individual country statistics, nearly an average of about 2% energy is consumed only by the computers, which is considered to be same as the Aviation.

Here, are some simple ways to discuss that were dropped out of my mind, as I want to go GREEN with my PC.

Six steps for GREEN Computing:-

1. Use an LCD instead of a CRT: It would be much better, if you slim down your CRT’s into LCDs, so that it reduces nearly about half of the power consumption.    
2. Consider a Laptop: You can cut your level for about 50-60% of the normal desktop consumption. Itz because, they have been design to be run on batteries, they have been also design to run much more efficiently. On the whole, I conclude that “a Laptop is 5% more eco-friendly than a desktop”.
3. Kill the screensaver: Screensavers with your desired pictures and slides indicates that you are wasting more and more energy than the actual usage. I say that,  a Screensaver actually acts like a beast of different sort.
4. Use your PC’s “sleep” function: (for vista OS users) If you are running Windows, get Windows “Vista”, you can put into sleep instantly and I believe it wakes much faster than I really do in the morning. Through this, we can save about $500 million per year nation wide, which is equal to  cleaning up and avoiding the usage of 3,80,000 cars.
5. Buy “Energy Star” compliant machines: Look for the Energy Star label whenever you buy a new PC. Under new specifications, the average energy star computer is 65% more efficient than conventional counterparts.
6. Recycle your old systems: Don’t just throw away the old one. Computers are usually having 4 toxants. Lead(Pb) is one of them, which lives on the circuit/motherboards and glass monitors. And Non-biodegradable plastic is found through out the machine. So, its better to go for the process of recycling. Some of the recycling companies put used and wasted monitors and other parts into good use.

Computer Recycling:-

• Look online for recycling centers like “www.earth911.org”.
• Check with your computer manufacturer. Some companies like DELL will take back used models.
• Ask your retailer to start a recycling program.
• Itz easy being GREEN.

Eco-computing is a necessity today. I think we should see a tremendous amount of innovation in the field of computers which help us in increase the scale and efficiency, lowing the costs of the IT products and finally, to go green with the concept of GREEN Computing.
